Subway fire in Toronto / lithium power cells

Post by Admin »

I don't know much about the weekend fire on the subway, but there have certainly been incidents with battery-powered appliances.

This here item appeared on page one of the Globe and Mail's web site today.

"Toronto fire chief warns of lithium-ion batteries’ risks after e-bike fire on subway"

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/toronto/article-toronto-fire-chief-warns-of-lithium-ion-batteries-risks-after-e-bike

At first I thought that the vehicle in question was an e-scooter; there have certainly been rumblings about mobility devices and the lack of elevators for safe egress. A related item is that Bird scooters apparently filed for bankruptcy protection. (New York Times link)

And a 2023 item on the CTV news had a Dyson cordless appliances customer inadvertently buying a third-party, cut-rate non-official Dyson battery pack through Amazon and she torched her place if I remember correctly.

In the summer city council and the fire chief started an awareness campaign.

In New York the mayor held a media event; lithium-ion batteries there reportedly caused 29 fatalities in recent years.
