Quorum and attendance roster at city of Toronto "public consultations"

Post by Admin »

Just after 11 a.m. on Tuesday morning... I had a lot on my plate and PM Carney was about to meet with Trump in Washington, but I had some questions and notes about the city of Toronto's processes that I wanted to table.

CBC for was streaming the get-together at the White House - www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHUFI2nfJ1c; apparently they did a switcheroo on the schedule and Carney did not actually show up until noon. Got to love it when Trump raised his fist a bit and Carney did a bit of fist raising of his own, albeit while smiling.

So I've had my doubts about the city's consultations (with developers, planners, councillors, and the broader public) for at least a few years. High on my list is a feeling that nobody tells me anything, and then when it comes down to the nitty gritty the stuff I see is often spotty - witness the way the Ward 16 councillor announce the "open house" (more like a closed door meeting) about the demolition of 1 Deauville Lane with like, a 24 hour notice from his private McServer in the middle of the biggest winter storm in decades. Later, at the "public consultation" the architect waxed about the bus service along Deauville Lane (um, no - certainly not during the open house!) and how it takes you to the Crosstown LRT and the Ontario Line - neither of which go to Food Basics say, or the Shops at Don Mills or Fairview Mall.

Attendance is often poor at these things. I have tried to tie this into what seems to be a near-complete absence of advertising. And what constitutes quorum??? At the Feb. 27, 2023 I believe it was, virtual (highly constrained Webex) "consultation" about putting a 52-storey condominium style building beside #7 St. Dennis Drive across from the Science Centre and the elevated railway (in this scenario the station for the various railways will be on the other side of the street, south of St. Dennis Drive)

(Roughed in section)

The consultation around the idea of skyscraper condos on the golf course (#155 St. Dennis Dr.)

With this much change in total why does the city not take a more "global" view of area development, as that lady suggested at the March 3, 2025 town hall meeting at Don Mills Collegiate... I have suggested that what she was asking for was a more holographic, detailed overview.

all-encompassing

(Other notes) lobbyists
