Kids operating motor-cycles

Post by Admin »

(From today's news file - Saturday Sept. 7) Check out this video - two kids pass a police car and then come straight at me through a pedestrian crossing, aboard a "Segway" or similar type of motor-cycle, scooting device. They proceed to run a red light beside McDonald's (eg. it's a busy roadway) on Gateway Blvd.! No license, no helmets, no horn, no sense or perspective whatsoever. Scary!

I ran the part where they rush at me twice - they are going so fast it's easy to miss.

There was a discussion about e-scooters on the national CBC radio network in early August:

I ran this issue past Google. Here's a quick screenshot of Google's take on some of it -

Some of the Ontario government's information about the pilot is here... hope I got the URL right:

Here's a view from the other side of the street, eg. this is at Gateway and Grenoble where there is a McDonald's outlet: https://25problems.com/video/free-for-all.mp4

My favourite (not) was the kook who drove a motor-cycle along the S-shaped curve on St. Dennis Drive
with a baby on the handle-bars. Father and baby wearing matching motor-cycle helmets!

So a few days later I'm walking through the parking lot at 18 St. Dennis and there's the guy sitting in the open back doors of a van working on something, and beside him the baby is sitting
on the motorcycle, without a helmet this time. As I approach I’m thinking “Oh boy, here we go.”

Naturally the inquisitive toddler reaches for the throttle and he starts to twist it and does the guy ever jump up fast to grab him!! I mean greased lightning!!! Safety first, that's the rule for a summer afternoon in Flemingdon Park.

I am not making this up. Image

A July 25 Toronto Star article touched on some of the rules around E-scooters, but it seemed to be generally dumbed down, and the classification of various vehicular traffic - especially on the sidewalk - was not quite up to snuff in my opinion:

https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/e-scooters-pedestrian-signals-and-pets-in-cars-5-toronto-traffic-laws-that-might-surprise...

The above item is archived at https://archive.is/ghyrX

Sample outtake: “E-bikes can (sic) be used in Ontario but riders need to comply with regulations such as wearing a helmet and being at least 16-years-old. E-bikes cannot be used on sidewalks and must conform to power, speed and weight limitations to be deemed legal.

“Technically, if they do not conform to what the province has set out as limitations, they become a motorcycle. And a motorcycle will require a proper helmet, a driver’s license, insurance ownership and license plates.”
