Post by Admin »

A newsletter from Councillor Jon Burnside says that changes are coming to the area re: how we vote. Here's a screenshot:

Lead by local representative Michael Coteau, dissenting Members of Parliament had a big write-up in the Hill Times this week:

See also the screenshot below. Here, "PROC" is a reference to the Procedure and House Affairs Committee, of Parliament.

I just saw this. Screenshot from my cell phone, posted while I am at Sunnybrook hospital on a medical escort trip.

Looks professional!

Subsequent to the above ^ ^ ^ post of all the signatures I did meet 1:1 with a few councillors - at least to say hello and shake hands during the mayoral by-election. So I still don't know much about the process but (according to pundit Éric Grenier, who this is a quote from) “Every decade, independent commissions re-draw Canada’s electoral map to reflect the growing population of the country. The process has now completed and the last remaining steps are for parliament to adopt the new maps and for Elections Canada to get everything in place to use that map when the next election is called. Because of the extra work that is required, the new map will only be used if the election occurs after April 2024. If it happens before that date, the next election will be fought over the map as it currently exists.”

In a current post on Substack dot com, Grenier adds that “Changing riding boundaries can have a real impact on electoral outcomes” and he adds that he will be “diving deep” into the re-drawn map, to see what those impact(s) might be.

I guess one of the questions I have at this time is.... why are you getting this background information from me and not from Toronto City Council who have obviously waded into the fray. I'm not up on what the latest decisions are (Grenier implies that he has summarized most of them in his on-line publication The Writ, saying he will now be turning his focus to the province of Ontario)... hopefully it's me who is being sloppy with published information and not the city councillors!

NB. Substack has been a bit of a surprise to me. I came across it earlier this year while looking up former M.P. Celina Caesar-Chavannes. Lots of spam IMO and many of these things seem like they are heavy handed - I'm referring here to the overall "shell" or "umbrella" or corporate "envelope" that envelops the content and how you get to it, and how you can participate etc. Like the Toronto Star and the New York Times there is a serious *pay wall* happening here. But I think the actual products themselves are peachy.

By the end of August it did look like Toronto will be losing a seat in the House of Commons, but Éric Grenier says the Liberals have a new new riding in Brampton.

And more broadly, according to Grenier the changes to a couple of Toronto ridings “will make it even tougher for the New Democrats to break the Liberal grip” hereabouts.

I met with Michael Coteau at... last night's town hall at the IBEW.

I don't think riding boundaries were mentioned.

Coteau subsequently moved to the new riding of Scarborough-Woburn, where he ran on his record and experience, including his service on the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities. The minister responsible for that file lost her seat on April 28th and the category was subsequently dropped from cabinet.

Election results from Global TV were: Michael Coteau 25,281 votes, and Reddy Muttukuru (Conservative) 14,291.

Runners up were George Wedge for the NDP with 1,466 votes, Gianne Broughton (Green) 499, Amina Bhaiyat (ind.) 181, and Ayub Sipra (CEP) 150.

Once again I think having an electoral district named "Don Valley..." stretch all the way west to Yonge Street, is nothing short of bizarre.

Here's a handy link to the *Ontario* portion of the 2022 federal riding changes, as overseen by the minions of the electoral reform commission: https://redecoupage-redistribution-2022.ca/com/on/rprt/index_e.aspx
